I’ve been thinking about the two articles I’ve linked below.
One is a book excerpt about being 460 pounds published in the Atlantic (it’s a fantastic piece). He is lucid, educated, aware, and yet.
He says about diets (and I entirely concur):
The other is about the incredible proliferation of sugar into our food system.
Walk into any grocery store, grab a few packaged products, and flip to the ingredients. You’ll likely spot added sugars — lots of them — provided you can discern their dizzying array of names: sucrose, dextrose, barley malt, agave nectar, high-fructose corn syrup, treacle, to list just a few.
It’s no accident that I am posting them together. It turns out 74% of all packaged foods (‘healthy’ or indulgent, it matters not) have some kind of sugar added to them, often derived from corn.
Americans eat a lot of packaged foods. Could it be in some of us it triggers an uncontrollable urge to eat? Most likely in all of us? Some more than others.
If we collectively accept the science then we can begin to tackle this issue with compassion, both for ourselves and others. We might also support regulating the inclusion of ingredients that are known to harm our health. It isn’t reasonable for 74% of our manufactured food supply to contain an ingredient known to cause serious health problems.
A cornerstone of my food philosophy is don’t put yourself in harms way. Acknowledge some things (many things) are too hard to put down, and never pick them up.
Principle 3 is up and tackles this from the standpoint of how to safely fill up your cupboards.
Read, incorporate, practice. Wash, rinse, repeat.
